Richard Knight

Hand Crafted Furniture

from Recycled and Salvaged Timber

Richard Knight is a craftsman whose passion lies in his preference for using timber's natural line rather than the manipulation of it.

“I have quite a collection of timber and the individuality of each piece is what inspires me to select it for the different and unique furniture I create,” said Richard.

Richard was introduced to the art of ‘bush furniture’ creation by Frank Wimmer who is renowned as a pioneer of the craft.

Richard says he has the dream job working at what he does best. With a natural affinity for wood, he creates rustic bush furniture that showcases the natural beauty of timber and is built to stand the test of time. Picture framing has been Richard's trade for much of his working life taking framing to another level by hand painting and customising with great effect.

Before moving to Queensland, Richard owned a gallery at Warburton in the Yarra Valley, Victoria during the 1990's. He sold works for a number of local artists including an inspirational pioneer in the art of rustic bush furniture, Frank Wimmer. Richard was impressed by the clever design of Frank's furniture constructed with mortise and tenons utilising recycled and salvaged timbers. Richard said, "Frank held workshops that attracted people from all over Australia on this technique. He told me he considered me his best students which was remarkable as I'd never attended one of his courses!"

Richard's craft also evolved from people like Jimmy Possum, a craftsman who, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, made chairs using this same technique of construction using simple hand tools such as a draw-knife, rasps and chisels. "Jimmy's chairs were designed so that the more you sat down on them the stronger they became," Richard added.

Richard showcases his creations each year at the Maleny Wood Expo usually held during the first weekend in May. He exhibits artistic furniture pieces including beds, tables, chairs and stools constructed from timbers such as maple, jacaranda, silky oak, tea tree, she oak and other salvaged woods.
